Body Type A
The characteristics of body type A are narrow shoulders, small to medium bust, and wide hips. The waist is often strikingly tinier compared to the hips, and the difference between upper and lower body is at least one size. Women with body type A have two different hip lines:
- The sharp line of transition from the waist to the hips; the hips start higher, directly at the waist – the so-called spoon-shape.
- Smooth transition from the waist to the hips; the widest part of the hips is low – the so-called pear-shaped.
Objective: With both types is to create an illusion of the ideal – hourglass-shaped figure. Therefore, focus has to be on the upper body.
Examples of celebrities with body type A:
Jennifer Lopez
Shakira
Beyonce
Christina Aguilera
Kim Kardashian
Jennifer Love-Hewitt
CLOTHING RECOMMENDATIONS
THE UPPER BODY – Colorful and bright fabrics emphasize the upper body. Blouses and shirts with interesting cuts and embellishments draw the attention to the bust line and shoulders. Frilled, pleated or otherwise striking sleeves and shoulder pads are the ones to look for. Rushing and ruffles at the neckline.
NECKLINE – Closed or boat neck, big collars, rushing and other striking details in the collar. Passé makes the shoulders and the bust visually bigger.
BELT & ACCESSORIES – The emphasis of the waist should be under the bust line or over the navel. In addition to the eye catching belt, the tiny waist can be emphasized with a fitted coat or dress. Also, necklaces with striking pendants, that reach the waistline, can help. Large and eye catching necklace, brooch, or a rosette around the neck is recommended in all situations.
THE LOWER BODY – Darker colors make the lower body visually smaller. Dark tailored pants and pencil skirts, but also flared skirts that cover the knees, will help to create a balance between the upper and lower body.
SWIMWEAR & BIKINI – bikini, swimsuit or two part bathing suit (i.e., bikini bottoms and a longer top), which are dark in color and monochrome at the bottom part, and light, ruffled, with large contrasting dots, horizontal lines, or otherwise eye-catching details at the upper part, are great. The top of a two part bathing suit should be longer than the middle part of the body. Strapless, or straps from the center part work great. Wider shoulder straps visually enlarge the bust. Bikini bottoms should be inconspicuous and visually slimming, for example, dark and monochromatic.
THE DON'T-s
THE UPPER BODY – all that dark and tight-fitting, combined with a light bottom, because it visually enhances the lower body. Tops with a loose waistline that reach the widest part of the hips.
THE LOWER BODY – anything colorful that emphasizes the lower body. Details and eye-catching pockets on the hipline.
NECKLINE – deep cleavage.
BELT – should not be at the waistline.
